Houses that are now homes

Three generations under one roof. The ground floor was planned around an elderly father who no longer takes stairs; the upper two floors are let out to pay back the loan.

A weekend home that became a full-time one. We turned the long plot into a courtyard house with a mango tree left exactly where it stood.

Built for heavy monsoon rain: deep balconies, raised plinth, and a roof that drains into a storage tank for the garden.

A narrow plot on a busy road. Stacking the stair and lift to one side left every flat with cross-ventilation and a balcony facing the hills.

Arched balconies on every floor give the parents' room and both children's rooms their own shaded outdoor corner.

Ten rental flats and an owner's penthouse, with a roof garden the whole building shares.

Stone and timber tones chosen to weather well in the northern dust, with deep windows that stay cool in summer.

A double-height arched entrance opens into a living room that looks straight through to the back garden.
